As autumn arrives, we begin again with a renewed sense of rhythm, breath, and grounded movement. This Tuesday morning Tai Chi Qigong Fusion class at North Lonsdale United Church offers a welcoming place to begin or continue your Tai Chi and Qigong practice in a warm, steady, and supportive community.
This class is what we call a Tai Chi Qigong Fusion class. That means students receive the benefit of both traditions: Tai Chi for balance, alignment, coordination, and flowing movement; and Qigong for breath, flexibility, relaxation, energy, and inner calm. Together, they offer a practice that is grounding, restorative, and quietly strengthening.
During the Tai Chi portion of this class, we will be learning and practising Wuduan Taijiquan, also known as the "5 Section", a short and beautifully designed Tai Chi form. This form is approachable for newer students while still offering depth, refinement, and fresh learning for returning students..
The 5 Section form was created more than 25 years ago by Sam Masich, Grand Master Shou-Yu Liang, and Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming as a shorter, accessible form connected to the Yang Style 24 Form. While the sequence itself is simple enough for beginners to learn, each movement contains beautiful detail, depth, and refinement. Once learned, this form can also make future study of the 24 Form and other Yang Style Tai Chi forms much easier, because students will already be familiar with many of the major postures, transitions, and movement principles.
One of the lovely things about the 5 Section form is that it can be practised almost anywhere. Once you know it, all you really need is 5 minutes and about 5 feet of space. You can truly ātake 5,ā move through the form, breathe more deeply, and feel better in body, mind, and spirit.
Each class begins with a gentle Tai Chi or Qigong-inspired warm-up to loosen the joints, increase flexibility, improve balance, and awaken the body. We will also explore foundational Tai Chi stances and postures, weight transfer, Tai Chi walking, breathing techniques, simple strengthening practices, and the slow flowing quality that makes Tai Chi both calming and quietly powerful. The final portion of class may include additional practice of the Tai Chi movements learned earlier in the class and/or a relaxing Health Qigong form to help students feel more centred, steady, and refreshed.
This is a beautiful class for those who want a little more than ājust exercise.ā Tai Chi and Qigong invite us to move with intention, breathe with awareness, and practise in a way that supports health, resilience, concentration, balance, and inner steadiness through the changing seasons.
Whether you are returning to continue your TQSpirit journey or joining us for the first time, this class offers a warm and steady place to practise. Come experience the balance of stillness and motion, the joy of learning in community, and the quiet strength that grows through regular practice. With TQSpirit, you also receive something more than a class ā you become part of a caring and growing circle of TQ Friendship.
Tai Chi is learned through repetition, patience, and steady practice over time. The weekly videos help you remember what was taught in class, review movements at your own pace, and build confidence between sessions. For newer students, the videos make it easier to become familiar with the movements without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. For returning and more experienced students, they offer a helpful way to refine posture, transitions, timing, breath, and flow.

Our Tuesday morning Tai Chi Qigong Fusion class is taught in-person only at North Lonsdale United Church. This class is especially suited to returning students who want to continue developing their practice, while also allowing space for some newer students who are ready to begin in a supportive mixed-level environment.
How our TQSpirit classes flow: Each 60 minute class will include a wide variety of Qigong forms: Health qigong forms that strengthen and stretch the body; Breathing meditations that calm the mind and the spirit; Breathing teachniques that useĀ abdominal breathing, reverse breathing, small and grand qi circulation; Qigong that helps purge toxic emotions, impurities release; Healing sounds that help bring the body into balance and smooth qi flow, and much more. Because this is a Fusion class, students receive the benefit of both traditions. Qigong helps us cultivate breath, energy, flexibility, and inner calm. Tai Chi helps us refine alignment, balance, coordination, and flowing movement. Together, they offer a practice that is grounding, restorative, and quietly strengthening.
Each class always starts with a slow, flowing warm-up to calming music, after which you will follow the instructor in various qigong exercises, stretches and meditations. The last 1/2 of the Fusion class will be dedicated to a beginner Tai Chi form.
No two classes are exactly the same, and yet the movements become increasingly familiar, remembered, and refined over time. Long-time students often appreciate the depth and variety each season brings. Newer students often discover how approachable the practice can feel, while still being gently challenged in a good way by new movements, postures, stances, and transitions.
Classes are taught in a warm, supportive, and welcoming environment. Students often appreciate the seasonal rhythm and the sense of community that develops over time. In this class, there is no need to be perfect. The goal is to show up, breathe, move, learn, and allow the practice to meet you where you are.
Come experience the balance of stillness and motion, and the joy of learning within a caring community as we move together through the energy of autumn.
