Saturday Traditional Yang Style Daoist Part 1-The 108
Yang Tai Chi is the most popular style in the world, and it is practiced by millions of people every day. The 108 is the “traditional” tai chi form of the Yang Family. Learning this form, which is taught in “6 sections”, will provide you with a rich introduction to the world of Taijiquan.
In the September to December set of classes you will learn Section 1 of the 108. Depending on how we progress as a group we may also move onto Section 2. Each class you will learn something new so it will keep you engaged, stimulated, and on your tai chi toes!
Classes begin with a good warm-up, some standing meditation or other moving meditation exercises. In the beginning, there will be an emphasis on “tai chi basics” which will give you a solid foundation upon which to build your tai chi practice.
In our classes, both In-Person and Live On-Zoom, at the same time, we do not rush the instruction. Each move of the 108 will be taught in detail, from the positioning of the legs, arms and hands, and overall body posture giving you time to learn, remember and practice each one in sequence. The goal for every tai chi student is to learn the fluid, graceful, circular and slow movements that will help cultivation and smooth flow of our inner life energy (qi). It will be a unique physical experience as it will be a spiritual one. It can be an empowering experience.
Each class will be videotaped and available as an add-on for you to use throughout the week to practice. It is the practice of tai chi that will provide many benefits. Read more about the 108 below.

Interesting facts about the 108 Traditional Yang Style Daoist Tai Chi Form
Learning the Classical Tai Chi long form methodically improves physical and mental dexterity the process of which improves each time you practice, making it exceptional for those over the age of 50 and an excellent challenge for those in their 30’s & 40’s. The extra effort of practice has dramatic effects.
It will challenge your flexibility, strength, focus, balance, and memory. The deliberate movements will make you feel more grounded, relaxed, and present in your body.
When practiced at a regular pace, the entire form can take up to 20-25 minutes to perform. Practicing really slow the entire 108 moves form can take up to 45 minutes.
As the form progresses through its 6 sections, which can all be learned independently from one another, the moves become increasingly more challenging from easy, to medium to harder moves. You’ll learn kicks and some moves requiring low stances (but can be performed in a high stance as a second option).
By taking part in learning this traditional form you are part of a community that extends around the world, goes back centuries, and involves peoples from all walks of life and ethnicities. Today, millions are practicing it.
Training the 108 is an exceptional physical workout. It will increase your focus. It will teach your mind not to wander or you could forget where you are in the sequence. Training focus has many advantages that you’ll discover as you progress in your form. Your day-to-day work schedule, your relationships and family will all benefit. The more focus you can bring to the practice of tai chi, and especially the 108, the more energy that will be made available to you.
The 108 form has greater repetition of important movements which enhances your style and stamina, and aids in stretching of all ligaments and sinew, aids in balance, flexibility and coordination.
Finishing the long form feels like having received a gentle but intelligent massage of the entire body. It helps to calm and relax you, energizing your own body’s natural restorative abilities and immune system.
If you suffer from a racing mind or difficulty concentrating then the long form will be of benefit to you. Giving your full attention to something physical enables you to focus throughout the day more easily.
Learning Tai Chi will help you gain sensitivity and awareness that goes beyond what you’ll discover through seated meditation.
We refer to the Yang Style Daoist 108 form because the Mandarin term, taijiquan, literally translates to “supreme ultimate fist”. The concept of “Supreme Ultimate’ is based in both Daoist and Confusician Chinese philosophies. Tai Chi theory, Internal principles, meditations, and martial arts practice are believed to have been formulated and developed by the Daoist monks. All tai chi has the goal of finding balance within constant change. All tai chi when practiced, reaps amazing health and wellness benefits.
1) Requests must be submitted in writing by email and is effective the date of the email.
2) Refunds will not be given after the 3rd class unless it is for medical reasons.
3) If you must stop class because you have contracted Covid 19 please contact us immediately.
4) Refunds provided will be calculated in the following manner – Classes already taken will be converted to a Drop-In Rate of $15.00/class, plus an added administration fee of $10.00. The balance will be refunded and sent to you by Interac or by mail.
5) Please note that if locations close due to Covid restrictions then all classes will continue on Zoom.
6) Some In-Person locations have special event days where all classes will either be On-Zoom or In-Person at an alternate location. No credit for class missed will be provided.
Whether On-Zoom or In-Person the registered student understands that the North Shore Tai Chi Spirit & Chinese Health Qigong organization has a strict no-video-of-the-Instructor or the Assistants without express written consent. Additionally, all students agree that any videos sent to them by the Instructor are for “your eyes only” and should never be shared with any other person or posted, in full or in part, on the Internet.
IN-PERSON COVID POLICIES (as of April 2022)
North Shore Tai-Chi Spirit & Chinese Health Qigong wants to create a safe place for indoor tai chi and qigong group practice. Many of our classes are both In-Person and On-Zoom at the same time.
In accordance with the Provincial Health Authority wearing a mask will be a personal choice at this time. However, we will continue to require that all In-Person students practice social distancing.
If a shut-down to all In-Person classes is mandated by the Provincial Health Authority, then all classes will continue on Zoom. No credit will be given to students unless they do not have adequate access to the Internet.
We request that all Zoom Students to do their best to be on Zoom at least 5 minutes before the start of the class.
All Zoom Students must attend with their Video in the “on” position. We are required to take attendance and this must be done visually each and every class.
We prefer that all Zoom Students keep their video in the “on” position throughout the class. The Instructor needs to see how each student is performing in order to provide the most accurate instructions.
Some Zoom classes are recorded. Only students who unmute themselves (on purpose or accidentally) might be recorded.
We ask that all Tai Chi students find a way, if possible, to show their entire torso so that the Instructor can best view each student’s progress.
IN-PERSON OPTIONS FOR ZOOM
Anyone signing up for In-Person classes will always have the option to be on Zoom where that option is available at that location. Some classes do not have the Zoom option.
Any In-Person registration means that you are guaranteed a spot in the class. When and if the need arises: if you are not feeling well , if you are out-of-town, or if you are running late; On-Zoom is an option for you.

I (referring to the student, the undersigned) voluntarily supply my contact information so that representatives of the North Shore Tai-Chi Spirit (& Chinese Health Qigong) can contact me regarding class changes, cancellations, course updates, and tuition reminders, and special event updates. Participation in tai chi & qigong classes involves exercise. Exercise can result in accidents or injuries. I assume the risk connected with participation in tai chi & qigong classes and represent that I am insufficiently good health and condition and do not suffer from any physical or mental impairment which would put me or anyone at risk of injury while receiving tai chi & qigong instruction from representatives of the North Shore Tai-Chi Spirit. I understand that North Shore Tai-Chi Spirit is a management company only. All Instructors represent themselves. I specifically agree that the North Shore Tai-Chi Spirit, the general manager, volunteers, and instructor(s) of any In-Person or Zoom classes I am participating in, and/or his associates, shall not be held liable for any claim, demand, cause of action of any kind, resulting from or related to my use of the facilities or instruction.
